On December 3-6, 2019, Liu Shijun, Secretary General of the World Tourism Alliance (here in after referred to as the WTA) and Zhang Yuan, Director Division of General Administration of the WTA attended the first China-Japan Tourism Forum and its affiliated activities in the Yamanashi Prefecture of Kyoto, Japan, where they were widely engaged with the tourism community of Japan including the Japanese members of the WTA.

In a greeting speech delivered at the reception on the evening of December 5, 2019, Secretary General Liu Shijun expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Japan for its great care and considerate arrangements on behalf of China’s tourism community, and said that the tourism industry plays an important role in contributing to an open-ended global economy and acts as a significant channel to enhance mutual understanding and trust among different countries and different civilizations. It is of great importance, he said, for China and Japan to facilitate communication and cooperation in tourism, as it can promote friendly people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. He also said that the WTA would like to offer support to push China-Japan tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchanges with its advantages in resources and platform.

Li Jinzao, Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism of China, Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary-General of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of the Yamanashi Prefecture and Hiroshi Tabata, Commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency attended the event, together with over 300 representatives from Chinese and Japanese tourism associations, study tour businesses, educational tourism associations, tourism academies, as well as cultural and tourism companies.

During their stay in Japan, Mr. Liu Shijun and his entourage attended an event named the Night of China’s Culture & Tourism Promotion, and paid an official visit to Kazuyoshi Akaba, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism and Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of the Yamanashi Prefecture with the delegation of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, to whom they introduced the WTA.

The China-Japan Tourism Forum is a practical measure taken to implement the idea of promoting China-Japan cultural and people-to-people exchanges proposed by the leaders of the two countries, and also a specific element of “equitably expanding people-to-people exchanges in an effort to increase the number of tourists to 15 million or above as soon as possible and organize the China-Japan Tourism Forum” set out in the eight outcomes reached at the First Meeting of the China-Japan High-Level Consultation Mechanism on People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges. A series of workshops were also held between Chinese and Japanese tourism communities and local exchanges took place during the Forum.
