On December 13, the 2019 China Cultural Finance Summit was co-held by the PBC School of Finance at Tsinghua University (Tsinghua PBCSF), the Dongcheng District Committee of the CPC and the Dongcheng District People’s Government in Beijing. Liu Shijun, Secretary General of the WTA attended the summit by invitation and made a speech.

In the speech themed on “the promotion of industrial integration and the creation of a beautiful life through joint efforts”, Secretary General Liu Shijun illustrated the development and trends of the cultural and tourism industries.

First of all, the wide-ranging cultural and tourism industries are growing rapidly. Compared with other industries, the cultural and tourism industries are fairly large and highly interrelated with wide coverage. They have been growing fast in recent years. As the people show a stronger desire for a better spiritual and cultural life and China’s economy enjoys ongoing sound momentum, it is not unforeseeable that people’s total demand for cultural and tourism consumption is going to increase, and the enormous cultural and tourism consumption will sustain the ongoing growth of these industries and other related industries.

Second, as the integration of cultural and tourism industries goes deeper at a faster pace, their forms have become more diversified as well. Both cultural and tourism industries feature high-level comprehensive development, penetration, relevancy, openness and integration. Cultural and tourism elements, joined by the Internet, new media and high-tech achieve deeper integration, innovation and mutual complementarity with different sectors – economic, social and ecological sectors – across a wider scope at a higher level and promote the emergence of new industrial forms. New technology is widely used in the cultural and tourism industries; enterprises in these industries speed up online and offline integration, face intensified competition, and provide a larger portfolio of cultural and tourism products through market competition and cooperation.

Third, as cultural and tourism consumption becomes rigid demand, these two industries are accelerating transformation and upgrading. Cultural and tourism consumption has become one of the basic necessities of people’s life or part of people’s rigid demand. They stand for people’s longings for a beautiful life and their spiritual pursuit. The era of mass tourism has arrived, and a multi-layered and diversified demand and consumption market pattern of culture and tourism has been put in place. In cultural and tourism consumption, the co-existence of mass consumption and polarization has become more manifest. Driven by policy support and market demand, industrial transformation and upgrading are gathering speed. Consumers lay greater emphasis on high-quality customized experience, so enterprises are supposed to provide high-quality cultural and tourism products in every market segment and create better consumption experience for consumers in this regard.

Fourth, cultural and tourism industries facilitate international exchanges and boost cultural confidence. Culture and tourism have become an important part of a nation’s hard power and soft power in foreign relations, and cultural and tourism services have come to play an increasingly important role in serving foreign relations. We should make the best of culture and tourism to tell China’s story well and continuously expand China’s circle of friends. The development of the tourism industry, cultural exchanges and integration and the prosperity of our nation have instilled the strongest faith in development and cultural confidence in the Chinese people never seen before. The confidence is derived from the behaviors of Chinese tourists across the globe, the fast growth of China’s cultural and tourism industries and its rapid economic and social development, and more importantly, the progress and development secured by our nation.
