      On January 21, the grand opening ceremony of the China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism 2020 was held at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Italy. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent congratulatory letters to the opening ceremony. Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Luo Shugang, and Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism Dario Franceschini, among others, attended the opening ceremony. Liu Shijun, Secretary-General of World Tourism Alliance (WTA) attended the opening and a China-Italy tourism forum at invitation.

      At the opening concert, Chinese Minister Luo and Italian Minister Franceschini read out the congratulatory letters from Chinese President Xi and Italian President Mattarella. The concert brought together artists from the JuniOrchestra of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and China National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO). The high-level collaboration between Chinese and Italian artists on classical melody from both sides featured excellent skills and marvelous performance, which gave rise to a feast of arts to guests present that day and vividly reflected the dialogue and mutual learning between two great ancient civilizations, and the exchange and integration of oriental and occidental cultures.

      Chinese Minister Luo and Italian Minister Franceschini attended the China-Italy tourism forum. Chaired by Francesco Rutelli, Italy’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Italian Coordinator of China-Italy Cultural Cooperation Mechanism, the forum was themed on “ancient civilizations and tourist resorts—China-Italy cultural and tourism cooperation in a new era”. Nearly 400 people, including leaders and relevant personnel from Chinese and Italian cultural, tourism sports, S&T and transport sectors participated in the forum. Secretary-General Liu, and Du Jiang, General Manager of China Tourism Group (CTG), Pansy Ho, Vice Chairman of Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), Yao Jun, General Manager of Overseas Chinese Town Holdings Company, Jane Jie, CEO of Trip.Com Group Ltd., Ge Yujing, Vice President of Tuniu.com., Chen Rong, Chairman of China Travel Service Co., Ltd., Lorenza Bonaccorsi, Undersecretary of Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Giovanni Malag, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), Giorgio Palmucci, President of the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT), and Mattia Palazzi, Mayor of Mantua engaged in discussions on three agendas, namely mutual learning between civilizations and tourism exchanges, an smart era and smart tourism, and the sustainable development of social environment and tourism. Secretary-General Liu expressed opinions on the sustainable development of social environment and tourism and positive response to excessive tourism, which struck a chord with participants widely.

      During the opening, Secretary-General Liu exchanged profound views with officials from relevant Italian culture and tourism departments, tourism businesses and media, and invited Italy to engage in relevant activities of the WTA to jointly promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation and development of tourism sectors .
